About the Social Justice Center

Social Justice Center, 1202 Williamson St.The Social Justice Center, Inc. (SJC) is a cooperative partnership of four progressive non-profits organizations founded in 2000. Wisconsin Community Fund, Madison Community Cooperative, Tenant Resource Center, and Citizen Action of Wisconsin Education Fund teamed up to create a non-profit office center with a social justice focus. These four organizations collectively own the Social Justice Center and share the responsibilities of administration, maintenance, and governance of the building. Located in the lower level of the SJC is the Incubator, a no-frills, shared office space that currently houses eight small, non-profit organizations. The Social Justice Center has a community meeting room available for use by the organizations in the building. Other non-profit organizations and community groups may use the room as well. Also found in the SJC is the Jackie Macaulay Gallery, a gallery for artists to display socially conscious, social justice-inspired, and humanitarian art.

Highlander Center Photo Exhibit Opening this Friday (10/5) - Monday, October 01, 2007

Please join us this Friday, October 5th from 5:00-9:00 PM, when the Jackie Macualay Gallery proudly presents the opening of "75 Years of Working for Justice," a photo exhibit documenting the Highlander's important role in pushing for social justice and social change in the United States.  Thorsten Horton, son of Highlander Center’s founder Myles Horton, sifted through hundreds of photos from the Wisconsin Historical Society for the exhibit.  He also added some photos from his personal collection to the show.

The photo collection documents the Highlander Center during the Labor, Desegregation, and the Civil Rights Movements of the 1940s, 50s, and 60s.  Some recognizable people in the photos include Martin Luther King, Eleanor Roosevelt, Rosa Parks, Woody Guthrie, Thurgood Marshall, and Peter Seeger.  Thorsten Horton will attend the opening to answer questions about the photos or the Highlander Center.
